I caught the 1925 silent The Phantom of the Opera at Birmingham's Symphony Hall the other night, accompanied by organist Nigel Ogden. Despite being nearly the only person there ineligible for the over-60 discount, it was a thrilling night and, to be honest, I wish I had been the only one there under 60. During a few scenes, intended to frighten moviegoers of 1925, there were a few decidedly condescending sniggers from the younger members of the audience. I guess once you've seen Saw III it's hard to go back to this kind of scary...But I liked it. The picture quality was amazing - the colorized Bal Masque scene with the Phantom dressed in a blood red cape and skull mask literally made me gasp - absolutely stunning. And that's the best part of Phantom, even more than Lon Chaney: the beautifully eerie sets of the subterranean chambers of Paris.
