According to the menu, the Mary Bill Diner was transported to Merrick from New Jersey in 1949, when Mary and Bill Zafos opened it. The diner looks like a rail car and the metal paneled ceilings are stained with the decades of smoking griddle grease. The tiles on the wall are cracked, you sink into the booths. It’s as cozy a joint as you can find. Merrick-born Richard Kessel walks in and says, “Global warming is here.” He may be right, it’s over 70 degrees outside. But, as for Mary Bill, “Everybody has their breakfast place, this is mine,” he said. He’s brought many a politician here, Cuomo, Fuschillo, etc. Though he couldn’t get Pataki to visit this diner. Kessel comes here three or four times a week. Onto the big question: Here’s what he says he wants his next job to be … running Madison Square Garden for Chuck Dolan.
