Der Spiegel has put out a four-part, heavily-reported “Our Hungry Planet” package on soaring prices for grain and other foods and their connection to biofuels, plus to such other factors as a growing Chinese appetite for meat. Writers Alexander Jung, Jens Gl sing, Frank Hornig and Wieland Wagner put it together. It’s a masterful-looking job, translated skillfully into English. The first part starts out with an effective microcosm, provided by a maker of the crunchy grain-flake cereal muesli as he ticks off the zooming cost he faces for each of the product’s main ingredients oats, wheat, barley, and rye. The writers, apparently, traveled the world for the project. One described driving along the Mississippi with a corn farmer. This is serious, detailed journalism.
