Aberration or inspiration? That's the question enveloping the suddenly-energized Devils as they prepare for the Maple Leafs invasion of Prudential Center on Friday night. Was the total - mostly third period - rout of Tampa Bay on Wednesday evening the REAL goods or simply an eccentric night highlighted by Jay Pandolfo's first career hat trick. The answer best will be provided during Toronto's visit but - at least for the moment - some awfully encouraging things are on the books. John Madden's offense being one of them, as Mad Dog demonstrated with a goal and three assists working on a line with buddy Pando and newcomer Dainius Zubrus. "The trick," Madden told me in our post-game interview, "was attention to detail. It was something that the coach stressed." Funny thing was that Brent Sutter used the same words in his postmortem.
