OK I missed this the first time round. But it looks like Andrews’ latest act of bastardry is designed to get around what we had been led to believe was the legal situation up to now and keep Dr Haneef in a state of limbo, detained for as long as Andrews feels like it, or until Dr Haneef’s legal team can catch up to Andrews’ abuse of executive power. Story so far: - Dr Haneef was charged because they had to either charge him or let him go; - The magistrate granted bail, meaning the doctor could have returned to the community; - Andrews immediately cancelled Haneef’s visa, meaning that if he posted bail he’d go straight into detention in a camp for illegal immigrants; - The DPP dropped the charges against Dr Haneef, meaning that he was expected to be deported straight away because his visa had been cancelled.
