While the fates of Jaromir Jagr and Sean Avery hang in the Blueshirts' balance, the Seventh Avenue sextet has landed the kind of defenseman needed; one who can lug the rubber out of his own end and create offense as well as hold his own on the blue line. Wade Redden, once considered a lifer in Ottawa, escapes Bryan Murray's clutches and immediately becomes the swing-man Glen Sather coveted to round out a well-balanced defense. Meanwhile, the Islanders did just as well in their own right when Garth Snow inked Mark Streit who -- according to at least one scout -- could be among the four best backliners available in Free Agency. If nothing else, the Streit acquisition underlines an important point; Snow knows what he's doing and, for the moment at least, owner Charles Wang is providing him with the resources to do so.
