Bob McDonald at Quirks and Quarks radio show for CBC in Canada had as his guest in last Saturday’s show a paleontologist who has done a “finite element analysis” of the heads of some pachycephalosaurs. Those are the dome-headed dinos whose thick craniums have long inspired speculation the animals banged heads, like big horn sheep. McDonald does his usual skillful job interviewing the researcher, from the Univ. of Alberta. He feels yep, they could have survived some mighty, head-on crashes. But McDonald may have missed a bet and perhaps could have challenged the post-doc a bit more. This is a controversial topic. Others in the field in recent years have reached exactly the opposite conclusion (as seen in this press release from UC Berkeley). Seems that this one invites a debate.
