Can Castillo Help The Mets? |

The Mets acquired Luis Castillo to bat second and play second. But they also acquired him because of Carlos Delgado and Shawn Green. The Mets recognized that Delgado at first and Green in right move as well as the Washington Monument. Ruben Gotay has been a nice little revelation as an offensive player, but he is a poor second baseman. The Mets worried that deficiency would only become more pronounced as the games became filled with more importance later in the season. Castillo is a three-time Gold Glove winner, and this trade will be determined by how much of his range he still has. Because the Mets believe he covers enough area to help them offset Green's slow movements in reaching pop-ups in shallow right and Delgado's lethargy in ranging to his right. On offense, Castillo will provide another speedy, switch-hitter to team with Jose Reyes atop the lineup. He can bunt and hit-and-run. Castillo hardly strikes out.
