Chevron Political Donations Add Reasons for Skepticism By Jamie Court and Judy Dugan Three months ago, California Assembly Speaker Fabian N ez stood next to a Chevron gas station in downtown Los Angeles with three colleagues and vowed in strong language to curb oil company machinations that drive up gasoline prices. The outcome so far is more whimper than bang. Some bills may even help oil companies more than consumers. One of those standing with N ez was Assemblyman Mike Davis, who recently gave sunny, unstinting praise (in this publication) to the bills generated by Speaker N ez. Yet the bill sponsored by Davis himself, purporting to fix the ripoff of motorists when gasoline loses energy at high temperatures, is not even a fig leaf, but an olive branch to the oil industry.
