I always like photos like this, the ones where it's quite palpable that something big is just about to happen...In the case of these shots, from the Broadway play Penny Arcade at the Fulton Theatre, 1930, a young Jimmy Cagney and Joan Blondell are on the brink fame and Hollywood stardom. Although Penny Arcade didn't last long, 24 performances if my sources are correct, it was enough to get the pair noticed by Al Jolson, who snapped up the rights to the story and sold them to Warner Bros. Supposedly Jolson insisted that Cagney and Blondell re-create their roles for the film version, Sinner's Holiday.____________________________________ [ Full article ] |
