Daisuke Matsuzaka returned from the disabled list for the Boston Red Sox and was shellacked for 7 runs in the St. Louis Cardinals 9-3 win in front of 37,227 fans at Fenway Park on Saturday afternoon. The loss was the second straight for the Red Sox at the Fens and is just the second time all season they’ve lost two in a row at home. Matsuzaka didn’t have command of any of his pitches today as he lasted just 1+ innings. He gave up 7 runs on 6 hits and 3 walks while striking out just 1. He faced 12 batters retiring just 3 in the shortest outing of his brief MLB career. Chris Smith made his MLB debut finally for the Red Sox and it started off well and then took a turn for the worse before turning back to good. He gave the local nine 4 solid innings allowing just a 1 run (grand slam to Troy Glaus) on 3 hits while striking out 3.
