Bikes on Sidewalks, Good, Bad and Damn Stupid!

Over the last few months I've been bicycling to and from more places then ever before in my life. I bike to the grocery market, the drug store, the post office and to swim practice among other places. I'm not saying it is an easy task in LA but I do beat traffic from time to time. I wear a helmet of course but I am amazed how many cyclist don't but that is another post. This post is about riding on sidewalks. When I ride my bike I pretty much stay on surface streets for about 95% of the time. If I'm not on a surface street I am sometimes riding down alleys behind buildings for example sometimes along Pico to avoid traffic. One day when riding to Ralph's on Pico I crossed over from the Beverly and Pico and went up the alley to the market so I could cross at a light and not get rammed down by traffic. On the way home I stay on Pico but instead of attempting a left turn with traffic I go down the street before mine by turning right
