Howard’s frenzied efforts to cling to power have gone from laughable through repellent to something close to outright derangement. Surely a growing number of people within his own party must be concerned at the long-term damage he is doing to our country in his mad single-minded lust to stay prime-minister-for-life. Now he’s turned his attention to our role in the Iraqi occupation. He’s written to the Iraqi prime minister ‘warning’ him that Australia might withdraw its troops. Given that the Iraqi government signalled as long ago as February that it could manage quite OK without the Australian troop contingent, I doubt that al-Maliki was much impressed. Howard is clearly acting, as always, to impress the local electorate. The letter contradicts Howard’s statement of only a month ago when he said he would bravely stay the course ‘despite growing domestic pressure’.
