Citing the disaster as an indication of God’s wrath for tolerance of homosexuality, the infamous “Reverend” Fred Phelps is pledging to picket the funerals of victims of the 35W bridge collapse. Phelps’ action is, of course, grossly offensive to the victims and their families. In fact, that is why his “flock” (mostly just his family) does it. This means that the conventional read on Phelps might be in error. Most people read Phelps’ crowd as fixated on — obsessed might be a better word — Biblical injunctions condemning homosexuality. But a more subtle read might take notice of the fact that Phelps people know the reaction their “warnings” will provoke. And given the implausible and even fantastic contortions of logic they use to link homosexuality to the funerals of soldiers and of disaster victims, it is reasonable to wonder if gaining the reaction might not be the real point.
