Accoona's IPO Seems Likely to Fall Flat |

We may still be muddling our way through Web 2.0, but that's not preventing plenty of early speculation in Web 3.0, also known as the semantic web. In most cases that only means investment into side projects by big corporations, like Xerox's (XRX) FactSpotter, or under-the-radar development teams (see Michael Copeland's excellent piece on Radar Networks). But last Friday, semantic search engine Accoona filed for an initial public offering on the NASDAQ, in hopes of attracting some investors to the concept. (The company previously filed for, but then withdrew, an IPO in London.) Accoona, founded in February 2004, actually runs three separate business segments: lead generation, search, and e-commerce, with almost all of its revenues coming from the last. But with no-name sites like Plasma Bay and NY Living as its money makers, it's Accoona's self-acclaimed semantic search capabilities that have to set it apart from the pack.
