The NY Times has a very touching article about Sandra Day O'Connor's husband, who suffers from advanced Alzheimer's disease. He's in an assisted-living center and he has struck up a relationship with another woman there; O'Connor is actually happy about it: Former Justice Sandra Day O'Connor's husband, suffering from Alzheimer's disease, has a romance with another woman, and the former justice is thrilled -- even visits with the new couple while they hold hands on the porch swing -- because it is a relief to see her husband of 55 years so content. Apparently this is quite common for Alzheimer's patients. They develop new attachments and it's a struggle for their family to understand it.
