You win the Booker Prize. You get a big interview in the New York Times. And the first thing they bring up? The McCanns. And this is the way of things for Anne Enright for a few years to come. Every journalist will ask her about it during the publicity for The Gathering and during the publicity for whatever book she writes next. Journalists ask the same questions, because they get their research from the same places, and most of them get it from the New York Times. And worse, many of the journalists will only be going on what other journalists have written, and won’t even have read the original LRB piece itself. How frustrating and disappointing this will be for Anne Enright we’ll learn about in time - but only, of course, by raising the subject in the first place.
