This from Actual Reader David Taffet commenting on my story that ran this ayem about the Temple Emanu-el gun incident: And it more than raised a smirk at Congregation Beth El Binah. Our rabbi began services with an announcement: "Before we start, please turn your cell phones off and make sure the safety on your gun is engaged." And since Rabbi [Jeffrey] Leynor is a conservative rabbi and the congregation is reform, we have always had a dispute between sitting or standing for the Shma (conservative doesn't, reform does). We decided that from now on, we'll sit. In Texas, it's obviously safer. A bit of context: The Shma, often called the Shema, is one of the central prayers in the Jewish service: Shema Yisrael Adonai Eloheinu Adonai Echad! Here's one fairly standard translation: Hear, O Israel! The Lord is our God, the Lord alone! And as David points out, there's a longstanding disagreement about whether to stand or sit when saying the prayer. [ Full article ] |
