I clearly remember when Katrina hit the feeling of being helpless and powerless. Of feeling so small and insignificant in the grand scheme of things. What can one person, or one family do that would make a difference? I wrote this shortly after Katrina. My children want to be a part of this, also. They go through their possessions to decide what they want to send. They watched some of the news coverage, enough to see the flooding. But when the news reporting turned to looting, rapes and murders, I turned it off and sent them on their way to play. Natural disasters are enough for them to handle now. There will be plenty of time for them to learn that people aren't always kind to each other. My children are having a difficult time trying to decide what to part with, everything is too special, and yet not special enough. I know exactly how they feel. I survey the bins.
