They came in waves, bundled up against the chilly night and loaded down with sleeping bags and blankets, making their way up Main Street on Friday night to the Salvation Army.One cruised in on a skateboard; several others pushed an overflowing shopping cart. They weren’t homeless, but for one night, they were standing in for a person who was.Kelley Guillen stretched out in the courtyard of the Salvation Army, one of about 600 people who prepared to spend the night outside as part of the “Homeless for the Homeless” project.“I see the homeless people all the time, and I can’t do anything,” the USC sophomore said. Like so many, she wonders how best to help a population that remains largely in the shadows.“I’m conflicted,” she said. “I think the best way is to give them jobs. I’m not against giving them money, but it doesn’t help in the long run.” [ Full article ] |
