It occurs to me that the GOP has historically done a fairly good job of painting Democratic Party presidential candidates as “elitist” and out of touch with the economic concerns on Main Street. In my recent recollection, I can only think of one Dem (Jimmy Carter) on which the Republicans couldn’t successfully pin the “elitist” label. Even though Bill Clinton came from humble means, the GOP managed to cast him as an Oxford educated liberal (translation: elitist), even though Rhodes scholarships at Oxford are merit based, rather than awarded to the well-heeled. And let’s don’t even get into how the GOP dealt with John Kerry’s windsurfing in 2004. Again, the bottom line for the GOP attack dogs is to imply that Ma and Pa Sixpack wouldn’t - couldn’t - ever hope to share a shot and a beer with a rich, out of touch Dem.
