2 Years Later and Things Are Still the Same |

There was an article last week in Time Magazine in regards to New Orleans, Katrina, the impending disaster of their ecosystem and what our government is not doing to prevent it. The most important aspect of the article was that Katrina did not cause the disaster in New Orleans, man did. The Army Corps of Engineers is in charge of the levees and control system that was suppose to protect Louisiana and Mississippi, yet they are the same governmental group that caused it. The article discusses how curbing the Mississippi river has caused a preventable epidemic in regards to cypress swamp lands, marshes, and barrier islands. These natural flood preventions that once protected New Orleans are disappearing at nearly a football field every half hour. This alone has set New Orleans up for impending disaster. If a large hurricane were to hit New Orleans there would be no natural flood plains to soften the impact of waves.
