No big deal, but righthanders Kyle Lohse and Freddy Garcia filed for free agency yesterday. Everybody knows the Phillies would like to bring back Curt Schilling next season. But could they bring back Schilling and Lohse? It seems very unlikely, if only because the Phillies have Cole Hamels, Kyle Kendrick, Jamie Moyer and Adam Eaton lined up as available starters. Also, because both of them would seem to cost too much. But I'm sure fans wouldn't mind a rotation next season that looked like this: Hamels, Schilling, Kendrick, Moyer and Lohse. Not bad. With Brett Myers still in the bullpen with Tom Gordon and Ryan Madson (and maybe J.C. Romero) things would look a little better in 2008. But I just don't see what the Phillies could do with Eaton. (I know, I know, release him.) I would be shocked if the Phillies released him or tried to move him to the bullpen. They simply need to hope he gets everything figured out -- physically and mentally -- heading into spring training. [ Full article ] |
