These fellows won’t be taking any hostages: Afghan and coalition troops on Sunday thwarted a Taliban ambush on a checkpoint in southern Afghanistan, killing 13 suspected militants in the process. The nearly two-hour encounter took place in Zabul’s Shahjoy district after the suspected Taliban militants tried to attack the checkpoint on the main road linking Kabul to the southern city of Kandahar, Ali Kheil, the spokesman for Zabul’s governor said Monday. Kheil said authorities recovered 13 bodies, along with nine AK-47 assault rifles, rocket-propelled grenades and two heavy machine guns. No Afghan or foreign troops were injured in the encounter, he said. Now, the Taliban don’t lose every encounter, but they make it up in volume. Or something like that. [ Full article ] |
