In a report from The Seattle Times, we learn about Wayne Watson, a man suffering from a rare, life-threatening lung disease called bronchiolitis obliterans, also known as popcorn lung. He developed the disease from deliberately inhaling the steamy odor from microwave popcorn bags and fracas wonders… why? I’m not wondering why would he develop the lung disease, no, that part is pretty clear. “The popcorn flavoring contains diacetyl, which has been linked to lung damage in workers inhaling its fumes in food-manufacturing plants. The chemical is a naturally occurring compound that gives butter its flavor and is found in cheese and wine, according to the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). It’s been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as a flavor ingredient, but hundreds of workers have sued flavoring makers in recent years for lung damage.
