Title: Tropical Storm Ida View count: 76 Rating: 5.0 (1 ratings) Description: Late season development in the Tropics brought me to Perdido Key. Cat 2 Hurricane Ida was losing strength quickly as I made my way with Reporter Steve Barrett to the Panhandle. A very interesting scenario was playing out. With a Tropical Storm entering a Baroclinic zone, which the northern Gulf in November is. A mid- to upper level trough was moving eastward across the south-central US, causing 40 kt plus vertical shear to Ida. With dry air being fed into her west and south west. This caused the rain shield to be far removed from the wind field. The result was this rare phenomenon caught on tape. Tropical Rain falling almost straight down. From about 10pm Central to about 1am the rain fell with almost no wind accompanying it. When we started doing live shots for the morning show at 4am Central, the rain had stopped and the winds began. They were barely sustaining Tropical Storm Force however. Maybe right down by the beach were there were no obstructions did we get a brief period of 40 mph winds.
