Title: Tim McMullen's "What's That on the Sidewalk?" Petrified Forest and Painted Desert View count: 36 Rating: 5.0 (4 ratings) Description: An original guitar instrumental from my collection, "Undress Ye Hairy Gentlemen" (1976), accompanying a video of The Petrified Forest National Park and the Painted Desert, Arizona (2009). An explanation of the title: This is actually the guitar arrangement for a rather unusual song that wrote in 1974. It is one of those pieces with quite a bit of double entendre. I was particularly influenced by Danny O'Keefe's early writing style. It is actually a song about suicide. The lyrics are as follows: Whats That On The Sidewalk? He offered her a quiet talk, a smile, and a song, But each knew what the other had in mind. She was safe enough she knew, and nothing could go wrong, For this was what shed come to town to find. Secrets made by window shade are drawn before the dawn; Behind the blind are souls in search of love, But the light that passed between them in the twinkling of a yawn Exploded all the lies shed been sure of... Whats that on the sidewalk? I heard the dead man say. That must be my own true love, Coming back my way! She flew right past my window Here on the thirteenth floor; I warned her to be patient— She could not ask for more! Doctor, youre not needed now; Shes one youll never cure. The lady must have lost her mind— Well never know for sure! The concrete had her captured as she searched for exit signs In a building filled with promises and dreams. Yet, in her haste to find escape, she tread between the lines And filled the evening silence with her screams...
