Title: The Roof is on Fire! Literally View count: 154 Rating: 1.6666666 (6 ratings) Description: Sorry, my title's probably a really bad joke. On the morning of Friday, June 19th, 2009. A man walking past the Georgia Theatre in downtown Athens, GA noticed smoke coming out from under the front doors. He called 911 & the fire department rushed to put out the flames. I live on a part of campus that's really close to downtown & saw a fire truck going by my dorm that morning. I didn't know what was burning until my mom called me to ask if I could see the smoke. The Northern part of campus was covered in smoke & that's all I could smell while walking to my classes. I tried to go near the theatre & look at it, but the smoke was stinging my eyes & all the firetrucks were in front of it so you couldn't see it anyway. All I saw was a fireman up in a bucket spraying water on the roof. Hopefully the owner will rebuild the theatre. The roof partially collapsed & the inside was totally gutted, but the exterior walls are still standing. R.E.M., the Police, B.B. King, & many more bands have played at this theatre & it is a well known landmark in Athens.
