There is not one universe, there are many multiverses. Each one contains an alternate version of a person. The many alternate selves all share a common life engery that is spread among them evenly. When one alternate self is killed, that energy spreads to the others and they become stronger/faster (less people to share with, still the same amount of energy). In the movie, interdimensional travel is possible, so the "evil" Jet Li (Yulaw) is out to kill all his alternate selves so he can have all that energy to himself. If that happens, he will become immortal, but it might also be the end of all the multiverses. As it turn out, there are only two left.
