Eric Greitensa Duke graduate, Rhodes Scholar, Navy SEAL, humanitarian worker, and boxing and marathon championpresented a lecture on moral education, character development, and strength. Eric Greitens (Duke 96, Rhodes and Truman Scholar, Ph.D from Oxford University) is a Lieutenant and U.S. Navy SEAL who has commanded counter-terrorism teams in Afghanistan, Southeast Asia, and the Horn of Africa. He recently returned from service in Iraq and currently serves as a reservist with US Special Operations Command. Prior to his military service, Eric worked as a humanitarian volunteer and documentary photographer in Croatia, Rwanda, Zaire, the Gaza Strip, Albania, Cambodia, Mexico, Bolivia, and India. At Duke, Eric served as the Chairman and founder of the Mayors University Advisory Council, Chairman of the Duke University Honor Council, and Editor-in-chief for Eruditio, an academic journal. He has won a Gold Medal at the British Universities Sports Association National Boxing Championships and competed as a member of the U.S. Navys Southwest Region Marathon Team. Eric completed a senior thesis in Philosophy at Duke titled On Courage and he developed a character education and training program for Naval Special Warfare.
