The song was written by Jessi Alexander and Jon Mabe, produced by John Shanks. It was released as the main single from the soundtrack to Hannah Montana: The Movie; "Let's Do This", "Let's Get Crazy" and "Back to Tennessee" were previously released for airplay, but were not released physically or digitally. The song was written for Hannah Montana: The Movie, a spin-off of the television series to portray the struggles of the plot. The down-tempo song, "The Climb", also has country influences and lyrically speaks about not giving up, no matter the circumstances of life. The song also achieved commercial success by reaching the top ten in charts for the United States, Canada, Australia and Norway. In the United States, Australia and Norway, "The Climb" became Cyrus's best charting single to date. It also scored the highest-charting U.S. single for any current Disney Channel Star and spent over eight weeks upon the top ten. It was certified 2x platinum by the RIAA. "The Climb" is Cyrus' first solo release to country radio, since charting the duet "Ready, Set, Don't Go" with her dad, Billy Ray Cyrus, in 2007. The song debuted at #48 on the Hot Country Songs chart on the chart week of March 14, 2009. It has since become her first solo Top 40 single on the country charts. On the chart week of March 21, 2009, it debuted at number 6 on Billboard Hot 100 as the Hot-Shot debut of the week due to strong digital downloads and airplay, giving Cyrus her highest charting U.S. single. It has since peaked at no. 4 on the Hot 100. "The Climb" has also become a big airplay hit for Cyrus in the U.S., reaching the top five on Mainstream Top 40 radio, her second song to do so (following "See You Again"). The song peaked at #1 on the Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks chart (Cyrus became the second youngest person to top this chart after LeAnn Rimes with "How Do I Live" in 1997.) It was Miley's first #1 single on any of Billboard's airplay charts. The song has so far sold over 2,000,000 downloads in the United States, becoming her second song to reach that threshold, the first being "See You Again". With no promotion, "The Climb" entered the UK Singles Chart at number 82 on March 22, 2009 and has so far peaked at number 11, making it Cyrus' fifth consecutive top 30 hit in the country alongside "See You Again (Rock Mafia Remix)", "7 Things", "Fly on the Wall" and "Hoedown Throwdown".
