Title: Saying goodbye View count: 408 Rating: 0 (0 ratings) Description: Memorial honoring a man that is Irreplaceable By Debra Schell Press And Journal Staff A somber day, as a young firefighter was laid to rest not far from where he died. Donald Mummert, Jr., 27, of Steelton, was killed in a motorcycle crash on Friday, July 3. Local firefighters honored Mummert with a firefighter funeral on July 9. Everything we asked him to do, he did. He was dedicated - a great guy. I wish I had five more guys like him, said Highspire Fire Chief, Robert Condran. He was irreplaceable. Donnie or Mum as they called him, started out as a firefighter in Highspire, the town where he grew up. Double, Double! and Winner, Winner, Chicken Dinner! were two phrases that Mummert was known for; coming from his love of double cheeseburgers and a time he won at the casino. He started out green (fresh) and showed tremendous progress later in the year, said Condran, who promoted him to Lt. last year. Mummert worked with the Highspire and Steelton Fire Departments for over two years, at the100 percent volunteer fire departments. He could bring a smile to anyones face. If you had a bad day, he could make you laugh, Condran said. He was a good friend to everyone. He will be greatly missed. A memory that Condran will never forget is when a few friends took Mummert to go water foul hunting. He was like a kid, he loved it, said Condran. The memory of the trip they took in 2008 will stay with him forever, Condran said. Mummert was killed in a motorcycle crash Friday morning in Lower Swatara Twp. According to Lower Swatara police, Mummerts motorcycle went off the road along Eisenhower Blvd. and over a curb. He was taken to Hershey Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. Mummert leaves behind two children, Monica, 4, and Leland, 2. Their mother, Marsha Hicks, stuck with Mummert through thick and thin said firefighter friends.
