Charley takes advantage of the opportunity and asks Sandy to join him in hunting buffalo, but Sandy refuses, he had abandoned the trade after growing weary of all the killing. But realizing he has no choice, Sandy finally agrees to become Charley's partner, and in town, he hires two men to round out the party: Jimmy O'Brien ( Russ Tamblyn) , a red-headed "half-breed" who has decided to leave the reservation and live as a white man, and Woodfoot (Lloyd Nolan), a peg-legged alcoholic who once was known as the best skinner in the territory. The hunt hasn't started yet, but Sandy, Woodfoot and Jimmy begins to know the violent temper of Charley, his human qualities: arrogance, greed, racism, lust, with virtually no regard for human beings and animals.
