This film became a comedy classic for me as soon as I saw it. I think it's John Candy's finest role. Del Griffith is how I always remember him and Steve Martin is at his best. (I have heard he considers this is best film) It has become an annual tradition for me to watch Del and Neal take their Thanksgiving road trip every November. It's still hilarious as ever and I still consider it a comedy masterpiece. I had heard they filmed a ton of footage that was never used, enough to make it a three hour film! I would love to see what else they had done. Is there any chance of them releasing some kind of special edition DVD so we could at least see what was cut? Maybe one day hopefully.
