It is an archipelago located between the Philippine Sea and the South China Sea, east of Vietnam, and north of Borneo. The archipelago is divided into three island groups: Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao with the port of Manila, on Luzon, as the capital city. Comprising 7,107 islands and islets, it is recognized as the second-largest archipelago in the world. The Philippines is blessed with a colourful history, a unique culture and a wealth of natural resources. The attractions in the Philippines are as many as they are diverse, with each island offering something different and special: white sandy beaches, lush green forests, majestic mountain peaks, ancient churches, awesome mountain terraces, secluded islets, modern cities, and rustic countryside. The archipelago is known as the "Pearl of Oriental Beauty and Enchantment" for its breathtaking scenic beauty and natural environment. From its long history of Western occupation, for over three centuries by Spanish and then another half century of American rule, mainstream Filipino culture is quite westernized by Asian standards. Yet Filipinos are essentially Southeast Asians, and many indigenous and pre-Hispanic attitudes and ways have been retained. The varied cultural influences have created a uniquely attractive Filipino culture, and endowed the Filipino people with a generosity of spirit and hospitality matched only by the country's beauty.
