View count: 16380 Rating: 4.74359 (39 ratings) Description: Philippe Mexès (born March 30, 1982 in Toulouse, France) is a French professional footballer who plays as a centre back for Italian club A.S. Roma. He began his career with local club Toulouse FC, with his older sister regularly taking him to the training sessions. However, he left for AJ Auxerre's youth team when he was sixteen years old. He participated in the Under-18 and Under-21 French national football teams, eventually winning a spot in the senior squad in August 2002. Since 2002 he has only been called up a few times, after he failed to make the French squad for the 2004 European Football Championship. He was called up for France's friendly match against Bosnia-Herzegovina in August 2006. Mexès is currently with A.S. Roma after completing a €7 million transfer in 2004. He officially signed his contract for the Roman club on September 1st 2004. After a difficult first season with the capitoline club, Mexès began the 2005-06 campaign on the bench, leaving the central defender spot to Sammy Kuffour. However, as Kuffour was on national team duty for Ghana, Mexès slowly gained playing time. He rapidly became a key player for Luciano Spalletti's squad. On "Sammy" Kuffour's return, Mexes retained his spot. As of the 2007-08 campaign, Mexes has established himself as an integral first team player for A.S. Roma. In total, after 4 years at A.S. Roma, the frenchman has scored 7 goals in the Italian Serie A. Alongside an accumulative 113 league matches played for the "giallorossi". He has reached the quarter-finals of the Uefa Champions League for the past two seasons. As well as being Italian Serie A runners-up for the last 3 seasons. He has also managed to celebrate the winning of the Coppa Italia in 2007 and 2008. As well as the Supercoppa Italiana (Italian Super Cup), just before the beginning of the 2007/2008 campaign. Half-way past the midpoint of the 2008/2009 season and Phillipe is now considered fundamental to AS Roma and he has stated on many occasions that he intends to spend his entire career in Rome with AS Roma.
