They led a massive Soviet forces consisting of a total 2.5 million soldiers, 41,000 artillery units, 7,500 aircraft, about 6,000 tanks and more than 3,000 ramps for the so-called Katjusjaraketter. De sovjetiske styrker blev i felten ledet af marskalerne Konstantin Rokossovskij (gennem Pommern i nord), Georgij Zjukov (i midten) og Ivan Konev (gennem Schlesien i syd). De ledede en massiv sovjetisk styrke bestående af totalt 2,5 millioner soldater, 41.000 artillerienheder, 7.500 fly, cirka 6.000 kampvogne og over 3.000 ramper for de såkaldte Katjusjaraketter. Tyskerne havde totalt i underkanten af en million mænd tilgængelig, men mange af disse var ikke regulære soldater, men godt tilårskomne mænd i militsen Volkssturm og tvangsudskrevne unge i Hitlerjugend helt ned i 14 års alderen. Mange af dem manglede våben og blev kun udstyret med så mange panzerfaust de kunne bære. Den sovjetiske styrke var overlegen på alle områder.
