Its countless ancient pagodas, monuments and archaeological sites, as well as its colourful festivals and arts, attest to the country's rich cultural heritage. Blessed with lush fertile plains fed by mighty rivers such as the Ayeyawaddy and Salween, Myanmar is also famous for its abundant gems and precious stones. Myanmar is a predominantly Buddhist country bordered by five neighbours: Bangladesh, China, India, Laos and Thailand. With a total population of over 60 million, Myanmar boasts a rich ethnic and cultural diversity that contributes considerably to the country's fascinating charm. The people of Myanmar are known for their friendliness, easygoing nature, hospitality and courtesy. Yangon is the main gateway to Myanmar. Green and cool with shady parks and beautiful lakes, Yangon has earned the name of "The Garden City of the East". The most notable structure in Yangon is the magnificent Shwedagon Pagoda, one of the holiest Buddhist shrines in Southeast Asia. A solid brick stupa completely covered in gold, the majestic pagoda is the city's most prominent landmark. Yangon was the capital of Myanmar until 2005, when the government moved to Naypyidaw, which means "Great City of the Sun" or "Abode of Kings." Myanmar, along with Laos, joined the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in July 1997.
