Muslim separatists say they are withdrawing their forces from Catholic farmlands and expect the fighting to be over by tomorrow. Here's more on this story. STORY: A two-day volley of bombs and mortars has rained down on farms and villages in North Cotabato. The military assault on the Moro Islamic Liberation Front or MILF has forced nearly 160,000 people to flee the attacks. They took only a few belongings and their livestock to take shelter in local schools. But the villagers are afraid of the gun-toting rebels. [Carmela Pano, Evacuee]: "Whatever will happen, if there will be more harassment, I'll be scared to go back home." Manila has accused hundreds of MILF guerrillas of occupying the villages. The military says 22 rebels have been killed since Sunday. But at least three civilians have also died in the attacks. Disaster officials say it is still too dangerous to help the evacuees. The MILF say they are withdrawing from the area and the fighting could be over by tomorrow. Tags: ntd, ntdtv, news, philippines, Author: NTDTV |
