The plot involves new kid David at Central High, who refuses to be cowed by the local meatheads who bully everyone else. David puts them in their place once too often, and the gang decides to teach him a lesson by knocking out supports for the car David is working under, crushing his leg. David takes revenge on the meatheads and offs them in a variety of creative ways, climaxing with a plot to blow up the whole school during the prom. It's tough to decide where this film lies- is it a slasher or not? There are certainly several elements present, especially the all-important horrible event that prompts a series of revenge murders, but several other factors make it exempt- most notably, the fact that we already know who the killer is. The murders don't play out in typical horror film fashion either, and from the get-go David is more of a sympathetic anti-hero rather than a raging, mentally-scarred reveng afficianado, like in traditional slasher films. Any way you slash it, tho, this film is a treat. Anyone who ever got pushed around in high school will find plenty to identify with! Of course, in this post-Columbine world, where school shootings have taken the place of workplace rampages as the great American path to creative self-expression, this film would cause the moralists to have a coniption if released today. 'Cause, you know, art is always the cause of, rather than the reflection of, a society's sickness.
