Title: Mama View count: 21 Rating: 5.0 (1 ratings) Description: November is Alzheimer's awareness month. Worldwide it is estimated that about 16 million people have Alzheimer's disease. In the Philippines, the population is rapidly ageing. In a study made by Nimfa B. Ogena, PhD. Professor, Population Institute and Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, College of Social Sciences and Philosophy, University of the Philippines last July 2007, results showed that the "expected rapid ageing of the Philippine population between 2000 and 2040 will usher in a significant increase in the number of old-age dependents, a likely decline in the potential support ratio, and a growing proportion of dementia/AD sufferers. Concomitant with the growing number of disabled persons becoming older is the escalation of financial and emotional burden on the working-age population of the country. Without a reliable dementia and AD information and referral system, policies and programs on diagnosis, treatment and care for dementia/AD patients and care providers would be ill advised and a large number of Filipinos will suffer. And when Filipinos suffer, the future of the country suffers. Hence, urgent efforts toward prevention and care of dementia/AD patients as well as legal instruments for wider access to benefits and support systems are necessary to assist families and communities in the face of the increasing burden of dementia/AD towards improving elderly health and at the same time increasing active and healthy life expectancy." Note: AD is Alzheimer's Dementia. There is no cure [as yet]. But we are hopeful that one day a cure will be found.
