Laos has one of the most pristine natural landscapes in Southeast Asia, with rugged, thickly forested mountains and plateaus making up most of the total area. Laos is crisscrossed by a myriad of rivers and streams, the most important of which is the Mekong River. Forming a natural border with Thailand in some areas, the Mekong passes through nearly 1,900 kilometres of Lao territory, shaping the way of life of almost 70 percent of the country's 6.2 million people. Laos traces its history to the Kingdom of Lan Xang - the Land of a Million Elephants - which from the 14th to the early 18th century was one of the largest kingdoms in Southeast Asia. After a period as a French protectorate, it gained independence in 1949. Laos joined ASEAN in 1997. The cultural heritage of Laos is second to none, as evidenced in such magnificent World Heritage sites as Luang Prabang and Wat Phou. Theravada Buddhism, the professed religion of about 90% of the Laotian people, casts a strong influence on Laotian society and daily life. Relatively unaffected by the consumerism and other problems associated with modernity, Laos retains a tranquility of the landscape and an easygoing way of life that are evocative of a bygone era. The gentleness and warmth of the Laotian people complete the picture of a charming country brimming with potential.
