Hundreds of people flocked on to the main street of Sarajevo this morning (Australian time), sounding their car horns as they celebrated the news of the Radovan Karadzic's capture. The Serbian Government announced that the wartime Bosnian Serb leader had been arrested after being on the run from the United Nations war crimes tribunal for the last 13 years. "I'm so happy. I have waited for this day for so long," a taxi driver named Tadzo said with a smile, as cars decorated by Bosnian flags passed by. "We are going to another bar to continue the celebration, we are not going home tonight," 24-year-old medical student Almir Tufo said . Hundreds of cars rushed to the Sarajevo main street minutes after the news of Karadzic's arrest, late on Monday (local time), was broadcast. Mr Tufo described the moment when the news reached the audience in a local concert hall, saying that all of a sudden people started looking at their mobile phones. "And then everybody stared screaming: Karadzic is arrested!" he said. A Muslim member of Bosnia's tripartite presidency, Haris Silajdzic, welcomed the move by the Serbian authorities. "This brings back the belief in justice. It means stability for Bosnia-Hercegovina," Mr Silajdzic told national television. Karadzic, sought by The Hague-based war crimes tribunal since July 1995, faces charges of genocide, complicity in genocide, extermination, murder, wilful killing, persecutions, deportation and inhumane acts against Muslims, Croats and other non-Serb civilians during Bosnia's 1992-95 war. The worst crimes on his indictment are the 43-month siege of the Bosnian capital, Sarajevo, in which some 12,000 civilians were killed, and the massacre of more than 8,000 Muslim males in the eastern Bosnian town of Srebrenica in July 1995.
