Historically, the country was under Hindu and Buddhist influence, becoming Islamic in the 13th century, with the exception of Hindu Bali. After it was taken over by the Dutch between the 16th to 19th century, Java became known as the hub of Dutch power in the Far East. Rich in natural resources, Java was also known as the regional hub for spice trade. Batavia or modern Jakarta was built in Java during colonial times and has served as the country's cultural, commercial and administrative center ever since. Indonesia became independent in 1949 and its social harmony has been at the center of the country's social policy. Renowned for its socio-cultural richness and its vast biodiversity, the Indonesian archipelago never ceases to draw visitors. Indonesia is one of the founding members of ASEAN, the region's long-standing grouping and Jakarta is home to the ASEAN Secretariat.
