Contact Committee Members Now July 27, 2008 Dear Friends, H.R. 6598, the Conyers - Burton Prevention of Equine Cruelty Act of 2008 (the bill which now replaces the AHSPA - HR 503 & S. 311), is scheduled for a hearing before the House Judiciary Committee, Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism and Homeland Security on Thursday, July 31st at 9:30 a.m. H.R. 6598 - introduced to the House on July 24th by Representative John Conyers Jr., in an effort to make our way around the pro horse slaughter lobby blockade of the AHSPA, will permanently put an end to the slaughter of horses for human consumption and the transport of live American horses for slaughter across the US border. So far this year, over 60,000 horses have been slaughtered in Canadian and Mexican horse slaughter plants under appalling conditions, where they are subjected to blatant abuse and unspeakable suffering. As the end of the 110th Congressional session looms near, Members of Congress must act NOW to stop this ongoing tragedy. WHAT YOU CAN DO: Time is of the essence, so immediate action is required to ensure swift passage of H.R. 6598 by both the Committee on the Judiciary and the House of Representatives. Please contact your US Representative and request him/her to cosponsor H.R. 6598. In addition, please contact ALL the members of the House Judiciary Committee asking them to cosponsor H.R. 6598 and support it as introduced by Congressman Conyers.
