He claims that homosexuals have the same rights to marriage as heterosexuals do. He told me that homosexuals could marry a woman, just like a heterosexual man could. Heterosexuals could not marry someone of the same sex, just like any homosexual could not. And that was this person's justification for banning gay marriages: its still equal. Seriously? It never ceases to amaze me how some people think. Sure, I see what he's saying, but its so wrong I just can't believe someone would actually think in this manner. Even in this sense homosexuals and heterosexuals do not have equality. For heterosexuals, this premise may be just fine. They are allowed to marry the person the love. The fact that they aren't allowed to marry someone of the same sex doesn't bother them at all because they have no sexual or romantic interest in the opposite sex anyway. For heterosexuals, the official recognition of love, and the legal rights that come with it, is all there for them to have with no problems. The same cannot be said for homosexuals. For homosexuals, this premise is very invalid. Homosexuals are equal in that we can marry someone of the opposite sex just like a heterosexual man? Give me a break. Homosexuals have an attraction to the same sex. Whether you believe this comes about at birth, is a product of environmental conditions growing up, or are just plain in denial that it even exists, the fact still remains that homosexuals like the same sex. So why would we ever want marry someone of the same sex? There would not be the same type of love found in heterosexual marriages. Denying a group of people the official recognition of love and the rights that come with it is anything but equal. Its outright discrimination. Sure, homosexuals can love each other if they wanted to; no one can take the feeling of love from you. But denying a group of people the same rights another group has concerning the same matter is not something any of us should condone. We live in the land of equal opportunity, yet homosexuals clearly do not equal opportunities for marriage. Its a disgrace. Conservatives don't want to redefine what marriage is, yet in essence are willing to say any man and woman can marry without love being a motivator? Sounds like you've already redefined marriage yourselves. What we need is not redefine what marriage is, but emphasize what a marriage is about: love.
