Title: Globalization and Child Labor CAHS 2000-001 View count: 19 Rating: 0 (0 ratings) Description: Group 2: The Globalizers CAHS 2000, Section 001 November 12, 2009 ABSTRACT Our goal is to educate the viewer on the controversial and global issue of child slavery and the tremendous scale on which it thrives thanks to globalization. By enacting potential real-life scenarios among people at varying levels of intellect and social status, we aim to inform the viewer and bring them into the issue via platforms they can understand and relate to. The average adult does not seem to understand the wide range of tasks that child slavery encompasses. A mix of video-recorded scenarios, flash images, memorable quotes, definitions, and video clips illustrate the grand scale to which child slavery applies and how it is still very much a booming business in our world today. We put the outcome of the future of this issue in the hands and pockets- of the viewer, but we do so not by bashing and name-calling but by showing the real-life results and benefits of acts of kindness as well as the consequences of doing nothing. Child slavery is a global issue that is very much alive and thriving today. With tasks ranging anywhere from simple chores like washing dishes and doing laundry, to hard labor like digging for diamonds or even psychologically damaging scenarios like pornography and prostitution, children of all ages from all over are being forced or tricked into doing horrific things every day. It is difficult to put an exact number on the quantity of slaves in the world as human beings are not equipped with barcodes and receipts, but this lack of information certainly contributes to keeping the general public in the dark. We aim to enlighten them. The United States of America, land of the free, is by no means immune to this global industry. The modern day slave trade nearly equals the illicit drug and arms sale trade as one of the biggest criminal operations in the world. (Hutchinson) Despicable as it may be, an International Labor Organization report estimates that roughly 2.5 billion people are trafficked each year generating over $30 billion in illicit profits, half of it in industrialized countries (Hutchinson) like the United States. The trafficked persons are by turn transformed into slaves on our own American soil. The US Legal system seems to have no resolute power in the dealings of this unfortunate black market other than through regular law and police enforcement, whose efforts are being exceedingly outpaced. (Hutchinson) The benefits of contributing to good and moral causes like those that work against child slavery have far reaching implications that are far greater than the typical feel-good outcome, but rather work on a national and global scale which is perhaps not visible to the average observer. Currently a number of organizations and institutions are already in existence to educate the public and combat the atrocities of child slavery like Stop Child Slavery, ECPAT International, YAP International, and many, many more. The Secretary of State herself, Hillary Clinton, made mention of humanitarian aid with regards to Pakistan. She quotes, Providing this assistance is not only the right thing to do, but we believe it is essential to global security and the security of the United States, and we are prepared to do more as the situation demands." (Humanitarian Aid to Pakistan) In essence, we must help others so that we may help ourselves. The globalized world of today with ills such as child slavery is an instable world, and instability inhibits growth and security. The well-being of a civilization hinges on those pillars, and it is the duty of all persons to do all they can to stop the spread of this illness. It affects and will infect us all. The symptoms are raging. The cure is known. Lets prescribe it and do what is needed. Get Involved. One Person, One Dollar, One Mouth at a time. (1)"Humanitarian Aid to Pakistan."
