Title: Final Fantasy IV DS - Fight with Proto-Babil (Part 1) View count: 257 Rating: 5.0 (1 ratings) Description: Part 2 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=um0cTpQFO8Q Woo. I've played a lot of RPGs and fought a lot of uber monsters, but man, this guy stands out in the crowd. If FF7's Emerald Weapon were to have a nightmare, and it somehow came to life, this is what it would look like; he is easily the most difficult boss I've ever fought in a Final Fantasy game. FF5's Omega, Shinryu, FF7's Emerald and Ruby Weapons, FF8's Omega Weapon, FF6 Advance's Kaiser Dragon... even the "Neo" versions of Omega and Shinryu in FF5 Advance have nothing on this beast. All of my characters are completely maxed out in both HP and stats (with Rosa and Rydia also maxed out in MP), and are equipped with Adamant Armor. Cecil and Kain also have Onion Swords. This was not a result of cheating or hacking - I played long and hard (as can be evidenced by my save file's playtime), fighting Liliths for Silver Apples and Dark Sages for Soma Drops. For the stats, I followed a stat-maxing guide, which can be found at http://www.gamefaqs.com/portable/ds/file/939425/54941. I got the five Pink Tails and two Red Tails for the Adamant and Onion Swords in my first playthrough. While this was recorded on an emulator, I -do- own this game for my DS, and the save file is from that copy; I uploaded it to my PC via SavSender. Proto-Babil has 400,000 hit points, which may not seem like much compared to the later Final Fantasies where some bosses had a million or more, but you have to remember that there's no W-Summon+Knights of the Round+Mimic/4xMegalixir+Mimic in this game. Every turn is crucial due to his ridiculously powerful counters. He has two main phases, the first of which isn't too hard to deal with, and the second of which is nothing short of -madness-. During the first phase, he'll either cast Light of Babil (a very strong attack which unless defended against will pretty much always be an instant kill) or Ninth Dimension (a "death" insta-kill, however my party is immune thanks to the Adamant Armor), and occasionally counter with Laser Barrage, which does between 2500 and 4000 damage to the entire party. Once he drops below around 125,000 HP, he'll enter his second phase, and things will get ugly. Not only will he begin to cast Divine Judgment at regular intervals (a massively powerful attack which does between 5000 and 8000 damage to the entire party), he'll randomly counter with Object 199 - that nasty attack that CPU uses if you naively destroy both his attack and defense nodes - which is a 99.9% guaranteed kill (it's not 100% because, believe it or not, it actually does NOT ignore defense - I have been able to reduce it to 9000-7500 damage using Brace: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nbv2UW-M_4g to see this). He'll also occasionally heal himself for around 29,000 HP (which will eventually take him back into his first phase). My main strategy is to use Draw Attacks+Brace on Cecil. Brace will reduce "Light of Babil" to around 2500 damage, while a regular "Defense" will reduce it to around 4200 damage; otherwise, it'll be an instant kill. Ninth Dimension is literally nothing to worry about. While Cecil uses Brace I'll have Rosa buff everyone with Haste, Protect and Shell, as well as cast Slow on Proto-Babil. Rydia will use Cry, lowering his defense, while Edge will Steal until he gets the Megalixir. The main attack force is Kain; Focus three times then use Darkness and Jump and he'll do 99,999 per hit. After the first hit, I'll use Rosa to actually -heal- Proto-Babil with Curaja for 19,998. I do this so that by the time he enters his third phase he'll have next to no HP left. Typically, after the fourth 99,999 damage Jump, I'll be able to have Rydia dualcast Meteor and/or have Edge throw a Fuma Shuriken to finish him off. The exception is if he decides to heal himself (as he did in the video *growl*), in which case I'll tend to just go all-out with Meteor and have Kain use another Jump before Darkness wears off. You certainly don't have to be completely maxed out to beat this guy (hell, there's enough videos of people beating him at lower stats) but if your party has less than 8,000 HP per member you've little chance of surviving Divine Judgment if it does get cast, so you'll have to be very mindful of your timing in attacking. Whatever you do, don't underestimate this guy for a second, because he'll rip your intestines out of your guts and whip your ass raw with them when you least expect it.
