Title: (Drew's Perspective) Fighitng Hunger in the Homeland Days 19-21 View count: 43 Rating: 0 (0 ratings) Description: Blog - www.osusife.blogspot.org Website - www.osusife.org Twitter - www.twitter.com/osusife Facebook page - http://www.facebook.com/reqs.php#/gro... Day 19: OSU SIFE traveled to Food Outreach to help out with a LiveFeed event. Food Outreach has programs the benefit those battling HIV/AIDS or cancer by supplying them with nutrition expertise and even foods from the food pantry in the building. Food Outreach has a partnership with LiveFeed, and organization that hosts a wide array of events that people can attend by donating food. For our volunteer time, we went to the Skyview Drive In movie theater for it's 60th anniversary in which we posted outside the gates with bins and collection jars for each car that traveled in. We raised over 200 pounds and over $200 dollars during that time, and we were rewarded with watching Transformers 2 and Star Trek on the big drive in movie theater screen. It was awesome! The organization also has demonstration kitchens to show the participants how to cook the meals and provide recipes for affordable and healthy meals. We went and sat in one of the children classes where we saw the children learning about wheat and the farmer's market. Afterward, we were given a tour of the facility and then prepared our own meal from one of the recipes in the cook book, which was delicious! For more info on Harvesters, check out: www.harvesters.org/ Immediately after the visit, we drove from Kansas City to Denver. That was a very long drive, and no scenery. I slept through most of the drive, only waking up went we finally arrived at our destination, the Homestead Hilton in Colorado. Simply put: Best. Hotel. Ever. They had a banner for us, gift baskets, and amazing rooms. We took advantage of this by...sleeping more since we arrived at 2 in the morning. Day 21: OSU SIFE had lunch at SAME Cafe, a cafe where there are no prices on the meals. You can donate how much, or little, for your meal. The cafe was created for those in need who did not wish to go to a soup kitchen. We ate there and it was amazing! For more info on SAME Cafe, check out: www.soallmayeat.org/ We then went to Operation Frontline. Operation Frontline is an organization that teaches every age what is healthy, what should be avoided, and how much food should be eaten based off the food pyramid. They also do cooking programs where they travel to different communities teaching people how to prepare healthy meals at low costs. For more info on Operation Frontline, check out: http://strength.org/operation_frontline/colorado/ Following that, we went to The Gathering Place. The Gathering Place is a place where women can go that has many resources available that allow them to get help in many fields, and provides a safe environment for those who enter. We received a tour of the facility, and saw the garden they had on the top floor, which was amazing. I really felt that The Gathering Place was doing a great benefit for women that are in need ranging from internet access, to simply a place to sit.
