Title: Favorite Artists: Paul Gauguin View count: 44 Rating: 4.6 (5 ratings) Description: Eugéne Henri Paul Gauguin, born in Paris in 1848, took a leading role in post-impressionism with his bold colors and primitivism. As a child he spent four years in Peru (his mother was Peruvian), then returned to France when he was seven. At 17, he joined the merchant marine, and three years later he went to the navy. After fulfilling his military requirements, he married a Danish woman, Mette Sophie Gad, and became a stockbroker. Eleven years and five children after his marriage, he moved his family to Copenhagen, but art beckoned and he left his family a year later to devote full time to his painting. His wife and children, suddenly with subsistence, returned to her parents. He spent some time in Panama and Martinique, then returned to France where he spent nine weeks with Van Gogh in Arles. By 1891, broke and still lacking recognition age the age of 42, Gauguin sailed to Tahiti to escape his disappointments. It was in the tropics that he painted some of his best-known work. Weakened by alcohol and dissipation, he died in 1903 of syphilis. He was 54 years old. Music is a traditional guitar piece, "L'Essence."
